Bargain destinations and the cheapest places to travel

Traveling Dads and Bad Travel Stories

I’m back home after two months on the road, going through a virtual mountain of snail mail (when will I read a stack of 22 magazines?) So meanwhile here are a few links to things with my name on them.

There’s just one quick quote from me in this piece about dads traveling alone with their kids, but it’s a good article worth checking out. I’ve had some great trips with my daughter and have found them relatively stress-free whether it was international or just down the road on a canoe and camping trip. But it depends a lot on your personality. If you’re an overplanning helicopter dad or someone who can’t turn off his crackberry, your mileage may very.

Doug Lansky and I are connected in several ways. His book First Time Around the World is a great companion to The World’s Cheapest Destinations. And he’s been a contributor to Perceptive Travel. He started up a blog called The Titanic Awards to highlight the worst travel experiences around the world. Here’s a link to my take on nasty toilets, terrible bus rides, and more. Skip past the giant mug shot and read my world’s worsts. Then hit the home page and scroll down for others from Perceptive Travel contributors David Farley, Rory MacLean, Dave Lowe, and Robert Reid, plus my Travelers’ Tales Publishing editor Larry Habegger.

I write lots of travel gear reviews on my other blog, but I really really like these Teva Omnium sandals/water shoes I’ve been wearing around for two months solid. Perhaps the best all-around travel shoes I’ve ever had for hot places.
