Empty Beaches Are Waiting

I just returned from the Los Cabos area, at the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. To say it’s “not very crowded” right now would be a major understatement. The photo above was shot on a Friday afternoon on what is normally the busiest beach in the whole region. Most of those little people you see on the sand are vendors.
If you’ve ever wanted to hit a major resort area and not pay regular prices for your hotel and flight, now’s the time. My flight down there was less than $325, including all the taxes and fees. For the articles I was working on I was visiting upscale resorts and none of them were more than half-full. Unless they had a wedding going on, 20% full was more like it.
There’s no real reason for this as they were doing pretty well a few months back, despite the down economy. The real reason it’s empty is the media scare over the H1N1 virus, even though there are now more cases in New York than where you would be going in Mexico. This second photo here is from a hotel balcony, looking down at the one person walking on the beach.
Los Cabos is built for vacationers with plenty of money to burn, but the same principle will apply no matter where you go. The whole country is on sale right now. Combine that with the fact we are in what is normally kind of a slow time anyway and you can almost “name your own price” without going to Priceline. Last week Bookit.com was running a deal where they would give you $100 in flight credit for every night of hotel you booked. A couple could go for a week and end up flying for free.
