Bargain destinations and the cheapest places to travel

Cheap Destination Travel News

Time for me to take a break from spouting off to highlight some noteworthy bargain destination info.

Goodbye to Saint Death in Mexico. When I was in Mexico City I took this photo of Santa Muerte, who also goes by the name of La Flaca (The Skinny One). It’s an eerie sight to see her floating down the street on peoples’ shoulders and apparently an even scarier sight if you see her tattooed on a thug’s arm. The government is bulldozing shrines and statues to her in northern border cities because apparently she is the patron saint of criminals, granting evil wishes as well as good ones.  No word yet on whether Saint Death prayer candles will stay on shelves…

More mayhem in Thailand. It’s been ugly again in Bangkok, with protesters taking to the streets and throwing things at the prime minister’s car. Then the army came out in force, which brought petrol bombs, blockades, and burning buses. Lovely. There’s a lull for now, but who knows what happens when the angry ones regroup. If you’re headed to Thailand in the next week (like Beth Whitman is), keep up on the news; you may want to catch an internal flight to the countryside upon arrival if things get tense again. Or if you’re coming overland, chill a little longer in Malaysia, Cambodia, or Laos. For more on the background of what has led up to all this when the airport got blockaded, see my earlier interview with Stuart McDonald of Travelfish.org.

Peru’s Fujimori convicted. Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori was found guilty of ordering mass killings during Peru’s “dirty war” against rebels in the 1990s. This makes him the first elected leader to be convicted of human rights abuses in his own country. He got 25 years, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. His daughter is a legislator and she is planning to run for president in 2011. If she wins, dear ole Dad will get a pardon.

Singapore on the cheap. Singapore Airlines, the city, and the Changi airport have teamed up to offer an incredible deal to travelers with a great stopover promotion. Apparently they are tired of everyone raving about their great airline and airport, but just changing planes and going elsewhere after arrival. So they are offering a one-night hotel stay for $1 (really!) or a swanky hotel for $20 to $40, plus S$10 to use in the airport, free shuttle transportation to the city, free hop-on bus rides, and free admission to a bunch of attractions. This deal is so good I thought it was an April Fool’s joke at first. If you’re on your way to somewhere else in Southeast Asia, fly Singapore Air and take your time getting there.

Shopping bargains in Ecuador. This last one isn’t new or news, but I just saw this piece from Budget Travel on what $100 buys in Ecuador. Nice stuff for a nice price.

Thanks for this article is very good and it is true that Peru is not an expensive country. Things cost less, and the attention is very good. On my last trip to this country I had the opportunity to buy many things that I find more expensive where I live. The best part is that you can visit various cities because the package tours are inexpensive. So if you travel to Peru with a prudent amount of money you can get to know and enjoy many places. I recommend hiring a travel agency; I did with TurPeru and was fine. If you want more information the web is http://www.turperu.com.pe

Thailand is indeed one of the cheapest place to travel in asia, with many attractions awaiting the budget traveler… sadly the country has been thrown into a chaos lately and it’s no longer that safe to go there anymore.

Oh man… the “guy” in the picture looks grouse. It’s like one of those drunk driving pictures that are real gory…those that they paste inside the car insurance man’s office all the time trying to tell people not to drink and drive. Yucks yeeks..
