The Khyber Pass, Barracuda Meat, and a Sinking City

Yes indeed, it’s time for the April issue of Perceptive Travel, filled with narrative tales from wandering book authors—plus reviews of four new world music albums.

The Mexico City story is mine, touching on sinking cathedrals and the racial divide in the huge metropolis. It’s not the kind of thing that could possibly fit into the magazine or trade publication assignments I was working on there.

I discovered Maliha Masood’s work when I was a judge for the Wanderlust and Lipstick travel writing contest and am happy to add her to our stable of talented authors. Her Breaking Frontiers piece is about a trip up the Khyber Pass to the Afghanistan border. Try imagining that jammed between the “Top-10 Beaches” and “16 Hot Hotels” stories you see all over the travel section of your local newsstand!

Steve McNutt is also new. He’s the co-editor of an interesting new book called The Peace Corps Latrine Reader. It’s a collection of stories from Peace Corps volunteers around the globe. His story is on a day when simple plans for a day don’t go so simply: Lost in the Mangroves of Belize.

Another month, another batch of awards for Perceptive Travel, so thanks to all of you who have been reading, linking, and occasionally buying gear or checking flight prices there. If you’re signed up for the newsletter, we’re giving away another sweet prize this month: a Canon Exilim digital camera. I reviewed a similar one here and can assure you it rocks.
