"were safe pre-9/11, but dangerous now"

Where---Pakistan? Iraq?

No, those aren't in the book. For almost anywhere else that's not a war zone, the world is no more dangerous now than it was eight years ago, despite what the 24-hour news channels highlight to get ratings. Plus you're more likely to be a victim of crime in Italy or the U.S. than you are in most developing countries. America is #1 by a mile when it comes to deadly homicides, unfortunately.

I bought this book a couple months ago when it came out and just want to say...thanks! I am leaving on a trip around the world this summer and I think you saved me a couple grand. This really helped me figure out which places were really the most affordable.
