Get on the Magic Bus

December 11th, 2008 Posted in Perceptive Travel, Travel books, contests

Magic BusTwo years ago we ran a story from Rory MacLean in Perceptive Travel titled: Dark Side of the Moon in Iran. This was around the time when his last book came out, titled Magic Bus: On the Hippie Trail from Istanbul to India.

The problem was, as great as our buddy Rory may be, he hasn’t had much luck with U.S. distribution of his titles. That all changed this year when the whole lot of the back catalog hit the shelves, including Next Exit Magic Kingdom. See an excerpt of that one here: Sunbathing with Ghosts in Cassadaga.

Finally, Magic Bus will hit the shelves the first week of January. But we’re way ahead of the game and have an advance copy with your name on it. Just leave a note in the comments with your real e-mail address (only I will see it) and I’ll pick one person at random to ship the book out to. Since I’ll be in year-end office cleaning mode, I’ll throw in a few other mystery goodies from the stash. To make this more fun, answer a simple question: where are you going next, and why?

Winner picked December 23, so post your comment before then. Since there aren’t enough links in here already, here’s an interview with Rory MacLean.

I’ll be heading to Belize for a work conference/vacation in March, a trip in the planning stages to take my mother to a Mexican spa this year for her Christmas/thanks-for-helping-so-much-getting-me-through-veterinary-school-in-one-piece-with-only-minor-psychological-damage. I’ll also be exploring the Pacific Northwest rafting, camping, etc over the next few months, and planning a 3 months backpacking trip through SE Asia and India for maybe 2010. But the school loans are finally kicking in during February, so we will see if I can keep up this pace.

My next non-work trip will be a roadtrip through New England. Lots of reasons, but this is the most fun one – the Vermont Cheese Trail

I’m headed to into mountainous Gunma prefecture from Tokyo to spend xmas morning waking up surrounded by dispassionate, yet cheerfully naked strangers in the snow and superheated waters.

    OK, Tim, I can’t resist.

My next extended trip will be to my neighborhood bar, where I’ll be crying over the net loss of my funds meant to go toward inebriating myself in a neighborhood bar in some distant locale.

Happy Holidays, and thanks so much for all the GREAT posts! Have fun in Peru!
