cheap travel CzechThis past weekend the cover story on the travel section of the Boston Globe was mine, a feature on ten destinations that are a bargain right now. (Yeah, a real stretch for me, right?) You can find it online now here: Exotic but not expensive.

My usual generalizations wouldn’t fly for a piece like this though, so there are some specific deals in each spot, some for vacationers, some that are just a slight splurge for those on a budget. There’s a week-long diving package with lodging for $535 (Honduras), five days of of immersive Spanish classes with homestay for $175 (Guatemala), a first-class train ticket for $16 (Egypt), and a hotel with a swimming pool and breakfast included for $16 (Java, Indonesia). And in a move I would have thought impossible in my lifetime, Iceland made the list. It’s not as cheap as the places in my book of course, but with the country feeling like it’s running a giant half-off sale, now is the time to go.

Speaking of opportunities, Arthur Frommer has been running a series of blog posts on places where Americans can get a far better deal now than they could six months or a year ago. Korea is a bargain right now. There’s a $1,299 tour of Turkey including airfare for 13 days! It’s way cheaper now to get to and around Australia. It’s Sayonara to Japan for a while though and I like Arthur’s sense of humor when he makes this his headline: When it comes to finding really expensive trips, the New York Times has no peer.

Great suggestions. Thanks for giving us more than you gave the Globe.

    Nice article, Tim.

I’m glad to see your wisdom finding its way to more mainstream outlets. Given our current economic considerations, I have this good feeling that demand for your insights will provide you some wonderful opportunities.

    Thanks, again, Tim.

Thanks Gary. Sometimes they let me play in the big pool if I behave myself.
