Second-best Airline Ad Ever

July 8th, 2008 Posted in Travel funnies, Travel industry, Vacation deals

A while back I highlighted the funny “Don’t %$#* Me Over” coupon that Southwest published as best airline ad ever.

This one isn’t quite so funny, but it’s equally effective for showing cheapskates like me what a deal Southwest is compared to their competitors.

A few weeks back I snagged a round-trip ticket to Kansas City for $136, all fees included, so it’s not all gloom and doom out there in the airline world. Yes, prices must go higher to compensate for fuel increases, but demand is slumping badly and people are avoiding the hassle when they can, so that’s keeping things in check a little. The key is, when you see a bargain flight, you need to grab it immediately.

Regardless of where fares are, I know when I fly with these guys I’m not going to have anyone reaching into my pocket because I want to stay hydrated in the air, I need to check a suitcase, or I want to avoid the middle seat. The price is the price—done!

I just saw this in action. I compared a bunch of flights for a trip I was taking this fall. The Southwest one was only $10 cheaper, but if I added in everything it was going to cost me in extra fees, it ended up $50 cheaper–before I even got on the plane and got thirsty.

I travel frequently from San Jose to Tampa and usually use orbitz, or contact Delta directly. I always check the Southwest fares — and not one time have I found them cheaper then what I could get elsewhere.

I went cross country years ago on Greyhound — and had to take phenobarbital to keep from smashing my neighbors with a shovel — to me, flying Southwest would be like getting on that bus again.

San Jose must be a strange market then. The fares from Tampa to Seattle or Portland are routinely $100 to $150 less than those on Delta.

Right now Tampa to San Jose is showing up as $293 round trip in September on Southwest with all the taxes and fees. Looks like USAir and Delta are matching it for now, but these days it won’t stop with the ticket price for them…

I’m not sure how Southwest is like Greyhound unless you don’t print out your boarding pass ahead of time and get stuck in the middle seat. You can SEE who you’re going to sit beside with that airline, unlike the luck of the draw with an assigned seat.
