Ski for Cheap in Europe

January 31st, 2008 Posted in Cheap Europe Travel, Vacation deals

cheap skiing EuropeA lot of people who visit the Lonely Planet website go straight to the country profiles or the Thorn Tree message board, but sometimes you can find some good bargain travel advice articles. Take this recent one: Ski Cheap in Europe.

The writer advises hitting the lesser-known “family” ski areas that serve more of a regional crowd and aren’t so well known. Plus here’s a good tip if you’re mixing night owls and those who like to be first on the slopes:

Before hitting the slopes, total up how much everyone in your party will really ski. Photographs are rarely needed on ski passes, meaning gourmets who lunch to 4pm and night owls in bed till noon can feasibly share them. In Switzerland generous ski-pass discounts for kids suddenly render top resorts like Zermatt (under 9s free, under 16s free on Saturday) surprisingly affordable for families.

I’ve got to say that the more I find out about Switzerland, the more deals I uncover. Did you know that just booking a hotel room or even a hostel bed in Geneva will get you a free public transportation pass—no strings attached? How awesome is that?! Spend that money on chocolates instead. Next ski trip, I’m off to the Alps.

There’s a way to get an even better deal though–pick a different country. I’ve skied in Slovenia and Romania for cheap, like $60 a day for lift tickets and lodging. Nobody knows about those places it seems, which means the crowds aren’t bad either.

I believe you will find Bulgaria as a cheap ski resort as well. This is one website for a start search http://www.bulgariaski.com/ or you can just try to search at Google for bulgaria+ski
