In Praise of Doing Nothing

hammock lifeIn my book Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune, I tried to lead each chapter off with an appropriate quote that went beyond the Mark Twain norm. There’s one from the Chinese author Lin Yutang that I particularly love:

If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live.

Unfortunately, judging by the profusion of crackberries and always-answered cellphones around us, most have not learned how to live.

It’s hard, but I try to switch off when I can. I will be visiting my father over the next few days of this holiday season, so adios. May your new year present lots of time for reflection and aimless afternoons.

    Life is all about the little things and the moments which takes you breathe away. Six month ago I dreamt of perfect sunsets and listening to the sounds of the Caribbean Sea against the shoe. Now I’m back home, and life doesn’t get any better that this.
