Katrina, I agree on Tikal and think Guatemalan school children should get in free actually. It's very expensive to maintain a site like that and foreign support is necessary. For something so fantastic, most of us don't mind paying far more.

When it's just some piddly museum or textile center though, paying more than a day's local wages isn't justifiable. It's a "soak the rich" scheme that goes well beyond what it costs to maintain the facility, especially since the facility is paying local rent rates and local wages for its workers. That extra admission premium is just going into someone's pocket.

the average wage in guatemala is $3 a day. of course locals should be able to pay much less for entrance fees to parks, ect. otherwise there is no way they would be able to afford to visit cultural sites of their own country (actually- most guatemalans wouldn't be able to afford to visit most places, such as tikal). of course a tourist who spent hundreds of dollars to travel to the country should have to pay more.

I mostly learned how much I DON'T know, but since I finally got around to learning the past tense conjugations of verbs, I can now understand someone who is telling a story! I think I need to break down and crack a book now and then though.
