In Costa Rica, Maybe You Get What You Pay For

This will be my last post on not-so-cheap Costa Rica as I am now in Guatemala. Being here reminded me though that you are not always comparing apples to apples when looking at costs in different countries.
I just went on a canopy zipline tour here in Guatemala (with my six-year-old daughter even—what a trooper) and although it was about $20 less per person than the one in Costa Rica, it probably deserved to be. In Costa Rica the platforms were less rickety, we wore helmets, the guides spoke fluent English, and the amount of acreage was more extensive. This one was a blast—don’t get me wrong—but definitely not as professional.
Also, the rafting trip I went on in Costa Rica was the best-run one I’ve been on outside of Nepal. Again, guides were professional, fluent in English, and had the latest and best equipment.
I was on my Costa Rica tour with Adventure Life, which also helped. A good adventure tour company will usually know who has the best reputation and will hook you up with the best (in this case, Rio Amigos). It might cost a tad more, but the experience is probably going to be top-notch.
Yes, I’m in the boat in this picture. In front with the long-sleeved white shirt. Yeeee-ha!
