Scared of Flying? Don’t Go to Russia
May 16th, 2007 Posted in Travel industryA report out last week from the International Air Transport Association for 2006 says that flying in Russia is a staggering 13 times more dangerous than the global average. The scary thing is, this was their best showing yet!
Major global accidents fell to 77 from 111 in 2005, which considering the millions of flights that are taking off, not too shabby at all. “The industry on average had 0.65 serious accident for every one million flights,” said the Wall Street Journal. Anyone scared of flying might want to compare that to the local auto accident rate in their home town.
But back to Russia. “According to IATA, Russia and other CIS countries had the highest accident rate of all regions, with 8.6 Western-built hull losses per million flights, 13 times the global average. Africa’s accident rate remains the second-highest in the world at 4.31 per million flights.”
So if you’re heading to Russia, try to take the train.
