Looking at the image of icelandairs stopover reminds me of my past two flights to Europe. Both had iceland stopovers and were around $600 rt. The first experience involved 2 nights in Iceland. Wonderful place, but not "free." The let you stay for up to a week without a fare increase, but be prepared to spend some money getting into Rykjavik, I recall a $30 bus ride or $75/day for a rental car, approximately. Also, the cheapest rooms we found were about $75 a night for 2 people. Save some money buying cheap fresh fish and cooking at a nice b&b instead of a hotel. Lots of variation in prices.
