Bargain destinations and the cheapest places to travel

International Flight Stopovers

March 6th, 2007 Posted in General, Vacation deals

If you’re flying across the globe, why not add an extra stop? SmarterTravel’s Ed Perkins, who contributed a section to my newest book (Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune), has a good piece out today on stopover possibilities on flights.

In “International Stopovers Anyone?” He runs down the options for adding another stop to your international flight without incurring any extra expense. There are quite a few of them listed, mostly in hub cities of international airlines. You can stop for a night or two officially in Amman, Dubai, Vienna, Hong Kong, Reykjavik, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and others. What to really sound like a jet-setter? Try this on for size: “Oh, we’re stopping for a night or two in Tahiti on the way.” (An option on Air Tahiti Nui.)

As I mentioned a while back, there are more of these that just aren’t promoted very heavily. I flew to Buenos Aires via Panama’s Copa Air this past summer and there was an option to stop over in Panama City for a night if we wanted. If you fly on South African Airways, I believe you can stop off in Ghana. Do some digging around if you’ve got some time to add another destination along the way.

Great idea. Thanks for the tips. This is the kind of information that puts value into international travel.

Looking at the image of icelandairs stopover reminds me of my past two flights to Europe. Both had iceland stopovers and were around $600 rt. The first experience involved 2 nights in Iceland. Wonderful place, but not “free.” The let you stay for up to a week without a fare increase, but be prepared to spend some money getting into Rykjavik, I recall a $30 bus ride or $75/day for a rental car, approximately. Also, the cheapest rooms we found were about $75 a night for 2 people. Save some money buying cheap fresh fish and cooking at a nice b&b instead of a hotel. Lots of variation in prices.
