Don’t Cancel Costa Rica Aunt Millie!

A reporter contacted me the other day about the situation in Costa Rica, asking if I thought it was safe to go there or not. I got quoted in the article, Dont’ Fear Costa Rica, but not with the safety stuff. Instead it’s me saying the real reason not to go there is it’s not a very good deal anymore. True, and kind of funny the way that sneaks in at the end of the piece.

Here’s what I said to him though that wasn’t fit to pass the editing stage. “How safe is a comparable-sized state in the U.S. in comparison?” Size-wise that’s West Virginia. Population-wise it’s close to Kentucky.  So are you more likely to get robbed by someone in Costa Rica or some Oxycontin or meth addict in Appalachia? After watching the evening news in both West Virginia and Kentucky, I’d feel safer in Costa Rica, personally.

I’d love to see the State Department turn the mirror on themselves and rate U.S. cities for theft and robbery the way they rate the foreign capitals.

Anyway, the Costa Rica robbery story is a really good one. A cruise tour excursion bus got jumped by some robbers and an old geezer Vietnam vet sprung into action. He put such a headlock on one of the thieves that the guy ended up dying. The others took off running. The talk radio hosts had to be drooling when they saw that coming across the news ticker.
