Finding a Cheap Hotel in Belize
February 26th, 2007 Posted in Cheap Latin America Travel, Destination reports, Travel bargains
Usually the official tourism site of a country is not all that much help, especially if you’re at the low end of the budget scale. So let’s hear it for Belize, a country that lists over 100 hotels under $60 per night on its Toucan Trail site.
This official Belize Tourism site is not just some feeble attempt to placate the home-grown hotels either. It’s useful, informative, and easy to navigate. If you pull up Placencia, for instance (the best place for bumming around on a real beach), there are 18 listings, including Bull’s Mahagony Beach Cabanas, pictured here. If you follow the link listed for their web site, the rate for a double is $35–a good deal for a waterfront cabana in Belize.
They also list 24 on Caye Caulker and 6 in resort central Ambergris Caye. If you’re looking to travel through Belize on a budget–which is not all that easy–bookmark this as a solid resource.
Also, as I stress in Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune, you can do doubly good by staying at places like this instead of some boring international chain. You’ll pay less and have a more interesting time—good for you–but you’ll also directly help the local economy with what you’re spending–good for them.

Thanks for finding the Toucan Trail… I worked on developing all of the content with the Tourism Board. There are so many treasures out there in Belize- so, enjoy and thanks for mentioning the program!

Glad to do it–you did a great job! I’m working on a travel planning book for Mexico and Central America that’s coming out in the fall, so this will be mentioned there too.

Tim: I’ll be one of your first buyers. Any idea when it is coming out? I tried to pre-order on Amazon.com, but it was not available.
Cindy: Thanks for putting together the Toucan Trail. I like buying local when I travel (it’s the point, after all!) to get the local flavor and to put my dollars into the pocket of a citizen instead of an international corporation.

It won’t show up on Amazon until it’s in the distributor’s catalog, which will be a few months. Should be out sometime in the fall. It’s Traveler’s Tool Kit: Mexico and Central America. Rob Sangster and I.

I think Belize is a wonderful place to live, visit, retire or do business. It is easy to find and easy to get to and one of the great things is you can actually drive there from the US or Canada. The people of Belize are really friendly people and willing to help. Belize beaches are not what you might expect because they are protected by the world’s second longest barrier reef and so no real surf is pounding the shore. Hotel prices are all over the map but even on Ambergris you can find some bargains. Vist Belize, it’s worth it.
