Shoulder Season vs. “Are You Nuts?” Season
January 19th, 2007 Posted in Cheap Europe Travel, Destination reports, Travel bargains
You can find some awfully cheap flights between the U.S. and Europe during the dead of winter, but there’s a good reason they’re half the price of other times of the year. It’s a crappy time to travel unless you’re going skiing. This week it has gotten worse than usual in England and Eastern Europe as killer winds whip through the region. Power is out, train service is disrupted, flights are grounded, and it’s downright deadly.
Some also not fun nastiness has hit parts of the U.S., for people coming the other direction, as it tends to do this time of year. You’re not likely to have trouble in Florida or Arizona, but who expected the worst spot this week to be Oklahoma?
It always pays to do your weather homework before making plans. The easiest way is still to consult a guidebook for month-by-month patterns, but you can find basic info on a lot of travel websites as well. If you want good prices and good weather as well, hit the sweet spot by going somewhere when it’s shoulder season. There’s some info on the what and where in my new book (Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune), but you can also check out this Transitions Abroad article: Best Seasons for Travel Bargains.
