Guidebook writer and perennial traveler Josh Berman co-wrote the excellent Moon Handbook on Nicaragua and the duo behind that book has a new one coming out soon on being or becoming an expat there. He and Randy Wood have just launched GoToNicaragua.com, a site that will instantly make you an “in the know” traveler. Here’s more about it on Josh’s blog. (And read a story Josh wrote for Perceptive Travel here.)
There are lots of reasons to go to Nicaragua. Some of the key ones are that it’s one of the world’s best bargains for backpackers, plus it offers a chance to really be an explorer and be ahead of the pack. No droves of people filing in and out of tour buses here and no miles of all-inclusive beach resorts priced for foreigners.
Localized websites like this one are a godsend when you can find them. At times they offer more than you’ll find in a guidebook–especially when it comes to accommodation choices–and at other times they serve as sort of a guidebook update, telling you what has changed since the manuscript was handed in. Either way, they can help you get a handle on a place much faster. Dig around for one of these that covers the place you’re headed. Not every destination will have one, but it’s worth checking around for ones not connected to a tour company. Here are a few good examples of others:
