Doh! Canada

June 9th, 2006 Posted in Destination reports, Vacation deals

It had to come to this eventually. The great white northern bargain is about gone, as this article in USA Today points out (avec moi). While we Americans and about anyone else in the developed world could always count on Canada for a reliable travel value, now it’s just the Europeans and Japanese who will feel that way.

I’m doing a nationally-syndicated radio interview on this subject Monday, so something tells me this is going to become a hot news item for a while. And drumming up American enthusiasm about coming to Canada is going to be a bit difficult without the price incentive. Last night Jon Stewart joked about the recently-captured terrorists there and how they had made a statement about wanting to avenge their hatred of the country. “How can you be mad at Canada?” Stewart asked. “That’s like being mad at toast!” There was much more–I’m sure you can find the whole shebang on YouTube.

(The image here is from a site called Large Canadian Roadside Attractions–it’s lots of fun.)
