Ché What? A Pop Icon for the Clueless
May 8th, 2006 Posted in GeneralBack in March Kent St. John posted this absolutely priceless photo he took in an Oslo airport. Hello Kitty, Superman, British Airways, and Ché:
Wow, he changed the world so much that he’s right up there with a fictional superhero and an airline logo. I won’t go into the stupidity of wearing a Ché t-shirt around Latin America or wearing a Communist star logo t-shirt in Saigon. Others have covered this issue plenty. But here is a sample of one of the alternative fun shirts you can get by browsing at Café Press (www.cafepress.com – search under his name). Warning, this site can be addictive if you like T-shirts

Yeah, it’s getting to be like pictures of Frida Kahlo; all over the place and not necessarily in a way that makes any sense.

That is how the pop culture monster works. Sucks an icon in, and then spits it back at you twice as hard, until everyone is covered in it, but can’t quite tell what why. I would like to see how many 13 years in Che Guevara t-shirts know what he was all about.
