The Mullahs are Hip to Blogs
October 6th, 2005 Posted in GeneralApparently the Iranian Government is tuned into the travel blogosphere.
I use Google Alert to keep tabs on when my stories or interviews are showing up in the media. Each time my name appears, I get a link by e-mail in my box. The results are often enlightening: I’ve had things show up in Pakistan, Albania, and Peru and at times my name has been the only thing on the page that I could read. Hopefully it was something nice.
But the cake-topper was this week, when my last blog entry showed up on the web site of The Iranian Cultural Heritage Ministry! It was my post about the most popular tourist destinations for Americans and since governments that hate us are the ones that seem to watch us most closely, perhaps that word alone was what led them to me.
They didn’t mention the name of my book damn it–guess I won’t make the bestseller list in Tehran–but they spelled my name right anyway. Here’s a link if you want to see what the Iranians are thinking about beyond nuclear energy and disdain for the sons of satan in the west. I liked this headline best: “The big hotel of Shiraz is supposed to be inaugurated by summer 2006, after a 7-year delay.”
(Disclaimer–I have never set foot in Iran. Canadians tell me it’s a wonderful place and the people are very hospitable…)
