I guess it all depends on your personality really.
A lot of people don't want to spend the time and effort to get the deals..they much prefer to do a "one stop shop" as it were.

Are those the people who will get the most out of the trip? Probably not.

I'm off the Nepal November 2009 with my two brother-in-laws for the Annapurna Circuit trek and we are doing it all ourselves when we get there.

I agree, it's much better to turn up, get a feel for a place and then decide what to do. You can find a local agency to help you organise what you want to do once your there...also helping locals (just make sure that they are reliable and registered!) Thats how I stumbled across GRG's Adventure Kayaking in Nepaland had the best time of my life!!

I agree some escorted tours or guided tours can make you feel trapped but if you find the right one it's a really good way to vacation if you're not entirely comfortable in the country or with the language. I wouldn't right them off straight away like Sean suggests. Just my opinion though, I've been on some good vacation package tours with escorted tour itineraries and I've also had a great time doing things on my own. :- )

I would never pay for a pre-arranged tour, once you've paid your stuck with having to go on their dates and where they say... just go it alone its far more fun
